The Japan rail pass was designed for tourists just like yourself. Many people love the idea of going to Japan for an extended vacation (see our 7-day and 14-day itineraries), hoping around from city to city, seeing all the temples and incredible landscapes along the way; maybe even visiting during cherry blossom season.
The Japan rail pass is a virtually all-you-can-use travel pass that only tourists can buy for a specific duration (7, 14 or 21 days). You can use it on pretty much any train, at any time, without the hassle of purchasing tickets in advance.
You can buy a rail pass that gets you standard seats or splurge for the Green Pass, a first-class rail pass that gets you reserved seats, plus other perks, in the best carriages. The pass can provide significant savings over buying single tickets. The current price for an adult, standard, 7-day pass is $219 USD; 14 days is $349 USD.
To make things even easier, many stations now offer automated ticket machines which can be used to quickly and conveniently reserve seats in advance. You just have to insert your pass into the machine and follow the on-screen instructions to choose your destination and select a date and time that suits you best.
I did a lot of research on our train journeys before we went to Japan to see if the Japan Rail Pass would be worth it for us. You should also do that research. The only way to truly know if the pass will benefit you is to look up each route you wish to take, write down all the associated ticket costs and add it all up.
For a quick look at the typical cost of tickets to and from top cities, take a look at the chart on japan-experience.com. It will help you quickly add your costs. There are three main scenarios where the JR pass is not worth it.
Yes, the number of days you purchase for your pass must be used consecutively. Once the pass has been activated, the validity period of the pass begins and it expires the set number of days later, whether it be 7, 14, or 21 days. It cannot be changed or extended.
Only you can decide if the Japan Rail Pass is worth it for you or not. The two main benefits of the pass are monetary savings and the convenience of not having to figure out how to buy tickets for each journey. If those two things are important to you, then you should definitely buy the JR pass.
When you start planning your trip to Japan a key question for most travellers is whether you need to buy a Japan Rail JR Pass and what is the cheapest option. If you search in Google for Japan Rail Passes you are immediately inundated with many websites advertising themselves as the best place to buy your JR pass, and it can be somewhat confusing to work out the best place to purchase your JR Pass online at the most affordable price.
Our recommended providers for purchasing your Japan Rail pass are Klook, Get Your Guide and JRailPass.com. All providers are reputable online travel agencies who we have worked with for many years, so we are therefore happy to recommend them. All options offer worldwide shipping, so you can use any of our recommended options regardless of where you live. Make sure you order your Japan Rail Pass at least 14 days prior to your departure date to enable your exchange order to be shipped to your home.
If you are planning to travel at least twice between cities on the shinkansen (eg. Tokyo to Kyoto, Osaka to Hiroshima or Osaka to Tokyo etc) it is worthwhile to purchase a Japan Rail Pass. You will get best value by planning your itinerary to cover all or most of your long distance travel within either a 7 day, 14 day or 21 day period. Your Japan Rail Pass can also be used within cities while it is active on almost all JR branded local trains and buses.
Japan Rail JR Passes can only be purchased by visitors to Japan who have a passport issued by a country other than Japan and have a temporary visitor designation on entry to Japan. You must show your passport when picking up your Japan Rail JR Pass, so ensure your passport has been stamped as you enter Japan.
Japan Rail now has the option to purchase your Japan Rail pass online, however the price is higher. For example, as at September 2022, to purchase a 7 day Second Class JR Pass through Klook would cost $US 207. The same pass through the official site is $US 235. Note that exchange rates will affect these prices.
For more information about whether the Narita Express is the best option to get from Narita to Tokyo I suggest you check out my article on best options to transfer from Narita Airport to Tokyo.
You can also determine the individual fares for your planned trip using the Japan Transit Planner website to determine whether the available passes are good value, or whether you just want to pay as you go for point to point tickets. Note that you may need to pay a small fee to access the full features of this site.
The official Japan Rail JR website is www.japanrailpass.net. The site provides good advice on Japan Rail JR Pass inclusions and how to use it, you can purchase a JR pass online (at a higher price) and it also has information about the travel agents who are authorised to sell the passes.
We have travelled Japan with the 21-day-pass ourselves and in this blog post we will answer all your questions about the Japan Rail Pass and give you some tips on the best way to travel Japan by train.
Our tip: We bought our Japan Railpass at jrailpass.com and were very satisfied with the handling. The passes were shipped by UPS Express one day after the order was placed and arrived the next day.
Payment is made either by bank transfer or for an additional fee by credit card or Paypal. If you pay by bank transfer, shipping will take a little longer as the passports will not be shipped until payment is received.
You will then receive a stamp in your passport and a small ticket with your seat number on it. On our trips it was never so crowded that a reservation was really necessary, but of course it is always more relaxed when you have one. A reservation is possible until shortly before the start of the journey, you can of course also reserve a few days in advance.
Our tip: If you are traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto or Osaka, it is best to reserve one day in advance and ask for a seat on the right side of the train. If the weather plays along, you will have a great view of Mount Fuji. The opposite direction to Tokyo is best to get a seat on the left side.
Officially it is required that you always have your passport with you when using the Rail Pass to confirm that you are really the person registered on the Rail Pass. We never had to show our passport, but you never know.
Domestic flights in Japan operate between the major cities and can sometimes even be cheaper than a train ticket. However, the train is definitely the best option in terms of time, as the train stations are always in the middle of the city and the airports are often relatively far out.
Hi, Im really uncertain about the JP Rail pass as the only known train journeys will be taking is Narita to Tokyo, Tokyo to Kyoto, Kyoto to Osaka and Maybe Osaka to Nara. I estimate this PP to be only 22000 when a 14 day pass is close to 46000 so in GBP this is 160 compared to a 330 14d pass any advise.
the Japan Rail Pass is the right pass for long-distance trains and especially for the Shinkansen. To travel within a city with metro and busses you need a ticket for the regional lines. There is the Suica card in Tokyo or the Pasmo card, which you can use in all the major cities for public transport (i.e. Osaka, Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima). We hope this helps.
Hello. I am traveling to Japan in a few months. We will be staying 3-4 days in Tokyo and the 3 days in Kyoto. Do you recommend this pass for this Or would it be cheaper to buy individual tickets Do we need to make train reservations before arriving Great article. Thank you!
The pass can be used only by foreign tourists and offers unlimited rides on JR trains for one, two or three weeks at a cost that residents of Japan can only dream of. It comes in two types: ordinary and green car. The latter is valid on green cars (first class cars) that offer more spacious seats than ordinary cars.
It is possible, but the ordinary rail pass will cover only the base fare. The green car fee and possible shinkansen or limited express supplement fees will have to be paid separately, which usually adds up to a rather large amount.
No, the Japan Rail Pass is a strictly personal pass and can be used only by the person whose name is printed in the pass. Pass holders may be asked by railway staff to produce their passports in order to confirm ownership of the pass.
The validity period of the Japan Rail Pass is based on calendar days (midnight to midnight) rather than 24 hour periods. For example: when starting to use a 7-day pass at noon on day 1, it will expire at midnight at the end of day 7 rather than at noon of day 8.
If you happen to be on board of a train at midnight, the Japan Rail Pass remains valid until the end of your journey, i.e. until you leave your final station through the ticket gates. This is true even if you transfer trains after midnight. However, if you transfer to a shinkansen, limited express or express train after midnight, the pass will not cover the express supplement for that train anymore.
The voucher can be exchanged at designated major JR stations across Japan, including the JR stations at Narita Airport and Kansai Airport. See this page for a list of designated stations and opening hours. Hand your voucher and passport (photocopy not accepted) to the ticket counter staff. After some processing, you will receive your Japan Rail Pass.
When you exchange your voucher to the actual pass, you do not need to start using the pass from the same date. You can select any date within a one month period as your starting date. However, once the actual pass is issued, the starting date cannot be changed anymore. Those who purchase their pass through the official JR website select the starting date of their pass at the time of purchase and cannot change it later. 59ce067264
