As the telegraph came to be widely used for business, people realized that there were many kinds of documents that could be prepared using only this kind of writing. For example, the instructions for operating the telegraph were prepared in a different form than the telegraph messages themselves. To minimize the cognitive load on the operator, these instructions were usually presented in a shorthand form; they could be learned only with the help of a manual, or by watching a trained operator. The instructions, like the messages, were kept in a log book.
Meanwhile, the invention of the typewriter had brought about an entirely new way of creating and managing text. The telegraph, which had made possible the transfer of messages over great distances, also had the effect of freeing writers from being tied to the conventions of print. Before the telegraph, writers could not control the impression their words made on the reader. With the telegraph, they could; not by actually moving the letters (as they had with the typewriter), but by simply specifying the message to be transmitted, the recipient's address, and the time at which it would be sent. This was a powerful change, and it was only a matter of time before people began to try to capitalize on it.
The development of the STS allowed the operators to enter the tab stops in a much more convenient and intuitive way than with the other mechanisms. The disadvantage was that the operator was not able to see the tab stop until the final keypress. This required the operator to manually move the carriage to a location where the tab stop would be displayed.
The concept of the tab key was first patented in 1896 by Isaac Pitman, who invented it for use in his manual typewriter. He also developed the concept of the `blanks` which, in the modern sense, are abbreviations to indicate spaces. The patent was eventually sold to Smith-Corona and made obsolete by the electric typewriter. Smith-Corona (later International Business Machines) eventually adopted the same concept in its models of electric typewriters. 827ec27edc
