But the Manipuri women's movement was not able to build on this success, and the movement was soon split into various groups. One such group calling itself the Manipuri Women's Front (MNF) demanded a full-fledged autonomous state in the northeast. The movement called for the federal government to send in the army to protect Manipuri women from attacks on their rights and for the creation of shelters for women. In 2005, a militant group calling itself the Manipuri Liberation Army (MLA) was formed by a woman called Lilami Reitei. The MLA claimed that the MNF was not fighting for the rights of Manipuri women but only for the nationalist cause. Members of the MLA shot dead an MNF member and three supporters.[59]
Tetephen S. Deka, the author of the Manipuri women's movement, also split off from the MNF in 2006. Deka demanded that the government make full-time courts for women to protect their rights. He also demanded that the government rehabilitate Manipuri women who were victims of the Imphal train blasts of August 2001.[60] Deka then formed the Women's Coordination Committee (WCC) as a group independent of the MNF. The WCC was one of the first Manipuri groups to demand the release of prisoners of war (POWs) held by China in the backdrop of the Kachin conflict .[61]
The Manipur Students' Union (MSU) is affiliated to the All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU). The AMSU is affiliated to the National Students Union of India (NSUI). In July 2006, the NSUI did not take part in the protests against the Delhi gang rape. The NSUI does not take any interest in the Meiteis in India or in Manipur. The NSUI does not even bother to run a Manipuri unit. In fact, the AMSU has a Manipuri unit, the Manipur Students' Federation (MSF). However, the female students' wing of the AMSU is affiliated to the Kajol Sabha, and not to the MSF.
In July 2015, Thangjam Devi raised the issue of violence against women in Manipur during a press conference. She criticised the state government for its failure to address the issue and claimed that the government was trying to divert attention from the rape of a Manipuri girl in Jammu and Kashmir. 827ec27edc
